Dromore 2000 set up a heritage group and launched it publicly to a large attendance in April 2017. The aims of the heritage project were to preserve all the information collected for the next generations to come. A threefold project!
- To collect, record and catalogue the stories, tales, photos, memorabilia, school records, videos, information on places of interest in Dromore i.e. The old creamery, the railway, old churches, schools and shops, Tummery Pipe band, characters of interest etc.
- To map the 60 townlands of Dromore including those that make up the town, their Gaelic meanings and origins, field names, places and things of interest in each townland i.e. antiquities, old ring forts, lint holes, standing stones, boundaries etc.
- Most importantly to encourage people to come out to small heritage meetings locally and large gatherings in the Sports centre where they hear the old stories, meet up and chat with their neighbours over a cup of tea. We particularly encourage older people and those rurally isolated to avail of these informative and social evenings out.
